We have stream lined the process for signing up for volunteer tasks. This process now works on all mobile devices and tablets. Also new this year, all volunteer jobs will be displayed here, including officer of the day.
Volunteer tasks are divided by department. We strive to have something that everyone enjoys. Please browse through the available jobs below. Volunteer jobs are continuously updated through out the year, and members are encouraged to check back frequently for new opportunities. Don’t forget to keep track of your volunteer hours. You can enter all completed volunteer hours for the year by filling out the “Completed Volunteer Job Report Form“.

DETAILS:
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Show up on time for your volunteer shift (see above).
- Check the available slips in the member sign out section of the binder in the brown desk in the breezeway. Note the length and beam of boats that have departed OYS so that you can best match slips to incoming boats.
- Monitor VHF transmissions on channel 68 from (1) your boat radio, (2) your hand-held radio (preferred), or (3) the club hand-held radio (stored in the lower cabinet of the trophy case at the main hall entrance). Please consider charging the device after your use for the next volunteer.
- When a call is hailing OYS, you respond with “OYS DOCK MASTER”.
- For reciprocal cruises there will be a list of incoming boats, their dimensions and slip assignments. Provide the incoming boat directions to their slip, and meet the incoming boat there to assist with the mooring. For example, “This is OYS dock master. You have been assigned slip C15, which is a Mediterranean mooring directly in front of the club house”.
- For incoming boats when there is not a reciprocal cruise, ask for the dimensions of the incoming vessel. For example, “This is OYS dock master. What is your length and beam?” You can directly assign the incoming boat to an open slip. Describe its location and meet the boat at the slip. If unsure of the availability of slips, the safer thing to do is to direct the incoming vessel to the visitor’s dock.
- Welcome the visitors to OYS. Request their reciprocal club membership card and ask them to sign in the binder (Visitors Section). Be sure that the visitor knows when to vacate the slip. Introduce the visitors to the OYS facilities and how to access the washroom and ice machine. Provide the visitors the code to the washrooms and wifi access code (business card containing these details is included in the check in desk).
- There is a lot of extra time during the Officer of the Day shift. Please check BBQ’s and public areas for cleanliness. Check the washrooms for paper and other necessities and replace if necessary. Empty the trash cans if necessary and report any plumbing problems to the Property Director, Ole Johnsen.
- If you are filling a Friday or Saturday shift, before you leave write a note or email to the next Officer of the Day about anything that they should know. Return the radio to the trophy cabinet.
- Log your volunteer hours in the members only page.
