OYS Sailing School - Junior and Youth Programs

Optimist/Mosquito Junior Sail
The student will begin a developmental program focussing on individual skill building and confidence. Each student will be assigned a boat. Some of the skills include:

  • Boat handling and balance
  • Sailing and sail trim
  • Fun sailing

    Optimist Junior Sail - Intro to Racing
    Students must supply their own Optimist dinghy. This program is designed of children 8 to 12 years old. Some of the skills include:

  • Basic racing rules and interpretatin
  • Basic sail theory and physics
  • Basic racing tactics
  • Performance boat handling and trim

    White Sail (I, II, III) - Introduction to Sailing
    White Sail is composed of three levels - I, II and III. The purpose of the White Sail program is to teach basic sailing skills and to provide an introduction to sailing that is both safe and enjoyable. Some of the skills include:

  • Basic boat handling and sail trim
  • Water safety
  • Knots
  • How to rig and de-rig a boat
  • Basic weather patterns
  • Fundamental sailing terminology and skills
  • Self rescue techniques

    Bronze Sail (IV, V) - Advanced Sailing Skills
    Upon successful completion of White Sail III, students may progress to the Bronze Sail program. Bronze Sail is composed of two levels, IV and V, and is focused on expanding the student's skills. Some of the skills include:

  • Advanced sail trim and boat handling
  • Performance sailing and proper boat trim
  • Trapezing
  • Physics of sailing
  • Spinnaker
  • Boat repair and maintenance

    Silver Sail (VI) - Introduction to Racing
    After successful completion of the Bronze Sail program, students may progress to the Silver Sail program. Silver Sail is considerably more intense that the White and Bronze programs requiring a greater time commitment. Students must also supply their own boat. Some of the skills include:

  • Introduction to the racing rules of sailing
  • Introductory racing tactics
  • Advanced sail trim
  • Various starting systems

    Gold Sail (VII) - Advanced Racing
    Gold Sail is the highest level in the Learn to Sail program and has been developed to prepare students for competition at the regional, provincial and national level. Some of the skills include:

  • Advanced racing rules and interpretation
  • Advanced sail theory and physics
  • Advanced racing tactics
  • Regatta management
  • High performance boat handling and trim
