1 | RULES |
|
1.1 | These races will be governed by The Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) and as modified by these sailing instructions. |
|
2 | ENTRIES |
|
2.1 | Eligibility requirements for competitors |
|
2.1.1 | All full members of Oakville Yacht Squadron are eligible to race provided that for the current season they have paid their membership dues, they have a valid PHRF certificate and have conformed to the registration requirements in sub section 2.1.3. Delinquent members will not be scored. |
|
2.1.2 | In addition, full senior members of the Oakville Club and the Bronte Harbour Yacht Club who wish to race with the Oakville Yacht Squadron and comply with the registration requirements in sub section 2.1.3 may do so upon payment of a fee of $50. Bronte Harbour Yacht Club members participating in the OYS / BHYC challenge series only are exempted from the payment of this fee. |

2.1.3 | Eligible boats may be entered by completing the registration form and signing the Oakville Yacht Squadron racing waiver. |
|
2.1.4 | Registrations should be filed prior to April 30, 2002. After that date, only the Racing Director will accept late registrations. Any boat that registers late will be scored DNS for all races prior to registration. |

2.1.5 | All races included in these instructions will be classified as Category A under Rule 79. |
|
2.1.6 | Any boat changing a division will be scored Did Not Start (DNS) for all races in a series that have already been completed prior to the change to the new division. |
|
2.1.7 | If five or more boats register in a class, a class division may be made. |
|
2.1.8 | If fewer than five boats register in a class, the boats shall be placed and scored in the appropriate PHRF division. At the discretion of the Race Director, and with a request by a representative of a group of fewer than five boats, a class division may be formed with fewer than five boats. |

3 | NOTICES AND CHANGES |
|
3.1 | Notices to competitors will be posted on the official racing notice board in the main clubhouse. |
|
3.2 | Any change to the sailing instructions will be posted before 1800 hours on the day before it will take effect for the weeknight races and one hour prior to the skippers meeting for the weekend races. |
|
4 | SIGNALS MADE ASHORE |
|
4.1 | Signals made ashore will be displayed on the flagpole. |
|
4.2 | When flag "AP" is displayed ashore, "1 minute" is replaced with "not less than 30 minutes" in race signal "AP". |
|

6 | THE COURSE |
|
6.1 | All races will start from one of the nine permanent OYS marks. The center of the circle, "X", is located approximately one mile on a bearing of 110 degrees magnetic from the Oakville Harbour Lighthouse. |
|
6.2 | Wednesday evening races will consist of a Windward / Leeward, Olympic, Gold Cup or Modified Windward / Leeward course. Course diagrams are included in Attachment A in these instructions. |
|
6.2.1 | A Windward / Leeward course indicated by the race committee boat will mean that the race equipped divisions will run a windward / leeward course and the main and jib divisions will sail an Olympic course. |
|
6.2.2 | An Olympic course indicated by the race committee boat will mean that all divisions will run an Olympic course. |
|
6.2.3 | A Gold Cup course indicated by the race committee boat will mean that all divisions will run a Gold Cup course. |
|
6.2.4 | A Modified Windward / Leeward course indicated by the race committee boat will mean that all divisions will run a modified windward / leeward course. |
|
6.3 | Thursday evening races will consist of an Olympic, Gold Cup or Triangle course. Course diagrams are included in attachment A in these instructions. |
|
6.3.1 | A Triangle course indicated by the race committee boat will mean that all divisions will run a triangle course. |
|
6.3.2 | All other courses are indicated as above in 6.2.2 and 6.2.3. |
|
6.4 | All divisions will sail the course indicated by the race committee boat. |
|
6.5 | Courses for the Spring Series, Fall Series, Turkey Race and other Races not listed in Section 5 will be announced at the skippers meeting on the day of the race. |

6.6 | Course Flags |
|
6.6.1 | For Wednesday and Thursday races, the course types will be indicated as follows:

6.6.2 | Directions will be indicated as follows:

6.6.3 | Course to the first mark will be indicated by a flag bearing the number of the OYS course mark, being flown from the committee boat, or by the magnetic bearing to the first mark, being displayed on the committee boat. |

6.7 | Shortening the Course |
|
6.7.1 | The Race Committee may shorten the course to any mark not rounded or passed by the lead boat on the course sailed. This changes code flag "S". Every effort will be made to complete a race instead of having to abandon one. |
|
6.7.2 | The Race Committee will not shorten a race to less than two legs. |
|
7 | MARKS |
|
7.1 | Eight marks are placed in a circle around Mark "X", every 45 degrees from magnetic North at a distance of approximately .71 nautical miles from "X". They are numbered clockwise, 1 to 8. Odd numbered marks are orange, even numbered marks are yellow. Mark 1 bears 225 degrees magnetic from "X". |

8 | THE START |
|
8.1 | The starting line shall be between the center flagstaff on the committee boat and the nearby mark. |
|
8.2 | Boats whose prep signal has not been made shall keep clear of the starting area and of all boats whose prep signal has been made. |
|
8.3 | The Wednesday and Thursday evening races will be started using Rule 26 with the Warning Signal at 18:50 hours. |
|
8.4 | The Class Flag for each start will be displayed at the Warning Signal for that class. |
|
8.5 | Beginning August 14, the starting sequence will begin at 18:30. |
|
8.6 | The starting sequence and warning signal for the Spring Series, Fall Series and Turkey Regatta will start at 13:00 hours. |
|
8.7 | A boat starting later than ten minutes after her starting signal will be scored as Did Not Start (DNS). This changes Rule A5. |
|
8.8 | Abandoned races will not be re-sailed. |
|
8.9 | Recalls |
|
8.9.1 | In the event of an individual recall, the Race Committee shall endeavor to notify a boat(s) by hail. Failure of the Race Committee to notify a boat shall not be grounds for redress. |
|
8.9.2 | When a general recall has been signaled, the recalled class(es) shall restart after the final scheduled start. This changes Rule 29.3. |
|
9 | TIME LIMIT |
|
9.1 | The time limits for each race of the Wednesday and Thursday series are as follows:

9.2 | Boats failing to finish within the time limit will be scored as Did Not Finish (DNF). This changes Rules 35 and A5. |

9.3 | The time limit for all other races will be 1700 hrs. Boats failing to finish within the time limit will be scored as Did Not Finish (DNF). This changes Rules 35 and A5. |
|
9.4 | If conditions warrant it, each boat will be responsible for illuminating its own sail number for the Race Committee or otherwise ensuring the Race Committee is aware of the sail number at the time of finishing. |
|
10 | THE FINISH |
|
10.1 | The finishing line shall be between the centre flagstaff of the committee boat and the finishing mark. |
|
11 | PROTESTS |
|
11.1 | Protests shall be written on forms available from the OYS Race Committee and shall be filed with the Race Director or representative designated by the Race Director, within one hour of the Race Committee boat docking. |
|
11.2 | Protests will be heard at the earliest opportunity, but no later than five days after the date the protest is filed. A schedule of the hearing date(s) will be posted on the official racing notice board. |
|
12 | SCORING |
|
12.1 | Races shall be scored using the PHRF-LO handicapping system (where applicable) using the "time on time" method of establishing corrected times. |
|
12.2 | The Wednesday and Thursday Series, Spring Series and Fall Series will be scored as provided in Appendix A of the Racing Rules using the Low Point System. |
|
12.3 | Wednesday and Thursday Evening Series |
|
12.3.1 | The Wednesday evening series shall be comprised of two, nine race series (A and B) running on alternate weeks. |
|
12.3.2 | The Thursday evening series shall be comprised of two, nine race series (A and B) running on alternate weeks. |
|
12.3.3 | A Series Champion will be determined by the sum of a boat's scores for all races held in that series excluding her two worst scores with a minimum of five races to count. |
|
12.3.4 | A Seasons Champion will be determined by the sum of a boat's scores for both A and B series, excluding her three worst scores, with a minimum of ten races to count. |
|
12.4 | For the Spring and Fall series each boat's total score will be the sum of her scores for all races in each series. |
|
12.5 | For all series and for the seasons championship, Disqualified (DSQ) scores will be counted. |
|
13 | RETIRING FROM A RACE |
|
13.1 | A retiring boat will:
Report to the Race Committee before leaving the course vicinity by hailing the Race Committee boat or a telephone call to the club.
OR
Leave the boat name, sail number and division on the official racing notice board in the main clubhouse within one hour of curfew. |
|
13.2 | A boat that starts a race and retires, according to section 13.1, prior to finishing the race will be scored as Retired (RET). |
|
13.3 | A boat that starts a race and fails to retire in accordance with section 13.1 will be Disqualified (DSQ) for that race and for the next race in that series (or the previous race in that series if the unreported retirement occurs in the last race of that series). |

14 | DIVISIONS AND STARTS |
|
14.1 | All Divisions and Starts will be posted on the official racing notice board no later than one week prior to the start of the first race. |
|
15 | SPORTSMANSHIP RULE |
|
15.1 | Harassment of the On Water Race Committee will not be tolerated. Anyone found to have harassed the On Water Race Committee under any circumstances may be Disqualified (DSQ) for that race and may have other penalties applied at the discretion of the Race Director. Unless they are positive remarks on a race well run, all criticism and suggestions will be made to the Race Director. |
