Head Coach – Gren Bunner
Gren has been a coach at OYS since 2014 and has been sailing for over 13 years. In the past, he raced laser radials, 420s, J22s, J27s, Etchells, and a variety of white sail competing keel boats. Outside of sailing, Gren has recently graduated OCAD University with a bachelor’s degree in design majoring in illustration, while working extensively with multiple software design systems. Gren is excited to act as the assistant head instructor this year, as he would like to lend a helping hand to the development of the coaches, sailors and programs. Gren is looking forward to creating creative lesson plans to help sailors learn by understanding theoretical knowledge in multiple ways.
Program Administrator, Adult Sailing & Private Coach – Brynn Paisley
Brynn Paisley is an energetic sailor who will be heading into her fourth summer of instructing sailing at the Oakville Yacht Squadron Sailing School. She has been sailing for as long as she can remember as her father got her into it a very young age. She loves instructing sailing as she finds sailing to be such a unique and challenging sport! With a passion for teaching and mentoring others she is always excited to share her love for this sport of sailing. Brynn is looking forward to supporting a wide range of sailors this year as she will be acting as the adult coach and be supporting private coaching this year. Contact Brynn at email@example.com
Single-Handed Race Team Coach – Anton Tsyhanok
Anton has had a long sailing career spanning the last thirteen years. He has been involved in the sport as a sailor, a racer and more recently a coach. He first completed his learn to sail levels at EYC and then proceeded to race Optimists and Lasers for the same club attaining his CANSail 6 during this time. Anton’s racing achievements include podium finishes at various regattas around Ontario. Anton was the winner of the District 3 Fogh Gold Cup Series in 2014 and was second in the Ontario Sailing Grand Prix in the same year. He is currently finishing his third year of Mechanical Engineering at Queen’s University and has been avidly involved in collegiate sailing with the Queens Sailing team. Anton happy to be joining OYS and looks forward to develop the racing program at OYS.
Double Handed Race Team Coach – Breanna Jager
Breanna will be coaching the 420 Race Team program this season and is excited to continue working with a wonderful group of sailors and coaches. This is Breanna’s fourth year coaching at OYS and she is looking forward to challenging the race team to further apply their sailing knowledge in order to achieve their podium goals. Growing up in a sailing family, Breanna knew from a young age that she loved sailing competitively. She enjoys the mental and physical workout you get while out on the water and the number of places you can travel with the sport. Before her days of coaching, Breanna was a tough competitor in the 420 dinghy class with her partner from Rochester Yacht Club. She then transitioned to the Laser Radial class as an individual and competed for OYS. Currently, Breanna races J22’s and J27’s and sails with her father and brothers on their J27 for weeknight racing at OYS. When Breanna is not sailing, she is diligently working towards her Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science at Eastern Illinois University while competing for the volleyball team.
CanSail 3/4 Head Coach – Nick Jovanovic
Nick will be coaching the CANSail 3&4 program this season. He is excited to be joining a wonderful group of sailors and coaches for his second year coaching at the OYSSS! Nick has been sailing since the age of six, where he learned to sail on Georgian Bay. Nick started sailing with the OYSSS at the age of 8 and has spent almost every summer at the OYSSS, where he also spent 3 years racing on on the Laser Race Team participating in various regattas across Ontario. Growing up in a sailing family, he understands the importance of fun, safety and respect for the water. He has sailed extensively in the Laser and 420 and is currently gaining experience racing on J-27s, participating in various regattas and race nights across the lake in the evenings. He hopes to expand his knowledge and branch into new racing classes. Nick is very excited to be teaching again this year and is motivated to create a safe and fun learning environment for youth sailors.
CanSail 3/4 Coach – Caleb Haydock
Caleb has been sailing at the Oakville Yacht Squadron Sailing School since he was 10 years old and is very excited to coach sailing this year with OYS. When he first started he was initially only supposed to spend two weeks at the start of the summer, but was instantly hooked on the sport and ended up spending his entire summer sailing at OYS! He has been coming back every summer, all summer, ever since. He did his White Sail 1, 2, and 3 in his first summer, Bronze Sail 4 & 5 in the next, and spent the 3 years after that on the race team. Last year he became an instructor and coached the Wetfeet program. He is currently at Queen’s University studying Biology, where he is looking to major in Biotechnology and pursue a certificate in business from the Smith School of business. Caleb is very excited for this year as he is coaching the Can Sail3/4 program and looks forward to a fun, safe summer!
OPTI Learn to Race Coach – Jacob Brown
Jacob will be coaching the Opti Learn to Race program this season. Jacob is enthusiastic to begin coaching again this year at Oakville Yacht Squadron. He is an experienced sailor who has been sailing at OYS since he was 10 years old and has been coaching here since last summer. Jacob loves the friendships and experiences that sailing brings and has raced in regattas all across Lake Ontario. When he isn’t sailing, Jacob is going to school at Western University, skiing, and playing the drums. This year Jacob plans to have a blast with another awesome group of sailors and teach them joys of racing.
CanSail 1/2 Head Coach – Mara Larch
Mara will be coaching the CANSail 1&2 program this season and is excited to join a wonderful group of sailors and coaches. This will be her third summer coaching. Mara has been sailing since she was 12 and loves the excitement that comes with racing. Mara has raced 420s in many regattas around Lake Ontario and is very excited to create a fun learning environment for her sailors this summer. During the off season, Mara is away at Acadia University studying Kinesiology.
CanSail 1/2 Coach – Magnus Hambleton
Magnus is a level 1-2 instructor at OYS. He has been sailing for all of his life and raced for four years in an Opti then transitioned into Lasers. He decided to turn a passion into a career and began coaching last year at OYS. He was inspired to coach sailing by his previous instructors, he wants to be a role model to current students like his coaches were to him. Magnus races keel boats with his dad and some of the fellow instructors. In the off season, you can find Magnus on the slopes snowboard racing. This is his second year instructing at OYS; he had a blast last year and can’t wait to come back for another summer!
CanSail 1/2 Coach – Stefan Rankovic
Stefan Rankovic will be one of the newer instructors joining our team and is looking forward to coaching the CANSail 1 program for the upcoming summer. Stefan has been sailing at OYS sailing school for the past 5 years, participating on our double handed race team. There, he learned many vital skills, when it comes to responsibility, teamwork and safety both on and off the water. He is excited to share the same values, as well as his passion for sailing with the students and the staff.
Wet Feet Head Coach – Jane Griffin
Jane will be acting as the Head Wet Feet coach this year; where she will be teaching new sailors how to sail. With a fun loving enthuastic style, Jane is looking forward to providing a strong first time experience to new sailors. She is attending her second year at Dalhousie University and has been sailing at OYS for over 11 years. She loves to work with young sailors to learn and develop in fun safe environment. Jane has had the best summers at sailing camp in Oakville and her goal is for the kids to enjoy their summer the same way she did and still does.
Wet Feet Coach – Nathan Jager
Nathan will be coaching the Wetfeet program this season and is excited to join a wonderful group of sailors and coaches. Nathan has been sailing since he was very young and loves to teach young sailors how fun it is to sail!! Growing up in a sailing family, Nathan understands the importance of fun, safety and respect for the water. He is currently an active member in the North American J27, J22, and Etchells fleets. He participates in many regattas around the lake and is very excited to create a fun learning environment for youth sailors.
