Membership
Membership at OYS brings more than just a place to keep your boat. We are the club in Oakville with a passion to sail, whether it be to race or cruise, we love to sail. Our racing programs include Laser dingy racing (youth and adults), Shark racing (in the learn-to-sail or borrow-a-boat program), and our regular Wednesday and Thursday night racing series (PHRF rated). Many boats also participate in the LYRA (Lake Yachting Race Assoc.), the Lake Ontario Short Handed Racing Series (single and double handed sailing), and the Lake Ontario 300 non-stop 300 mile race around the lake in July, as well as our annual regatta.
Our cruising program includes organized trips to various clubs around the lake. As a member as OYS, you also have exchange privileges to visit clubs participating in the reciprocal cruising program.
There are various membership categories (see below). We are a self-help club where our existence relies on its membership to help in any, and every way they can.
Our 87+/- Boat slips are awarded on a seniority point system. Points are awarded to Full and Intermediate members for each year at the club. Dry sail boats including Sharks, Etchel, Capri 25, J22etc., utilize our 3000lb crane (1000lb mast crane) to get in and out. Of course the Laser fleet uses the dingy boat ramp. All boats that have a Squadron mooring are guaranteed a winter storage spot. Winter mast storage is available on site. On site folding cradle storage is available to all members, regardless of where your boat is moored, at no extra cost. Your winter storage fee includes self help haul-out, bottom wash and launch – there are no hidden fees.
We also boast one of the best equipped sailing schools on the lake, and have produced Olympic calibre sailors. Your kids or grand children will thrive in the new upbeat program.
