(Double click on Pic for full story)

Sailing World voted it one of the best low cost PHRF racers. Others have referred to it as “Cheap Speed”. Rod Johnstone once remarked over a beer that it was “one of his better designs”. The hull of the J/80 is a direct evolution of this boat; in fact, it’s rumored to be the same mold with just a foot chopped of the back .
After 29 years, the J/27 is still highly competitive, physically & tactically challenging to sail and an emerging One Design Fleet in our area and club.
For about $15k you can:
•	Pass 35 Footers Upwind
•	Surf Downwind at 14 knots in 20 knot of air
•	Do it all at a lower annual costs and with less crew than equivalent boats
•	Join the fastest growing One Design fleet in Oakville
•	Become part of a Welcoming & Corinthian group of 13 owners regionally

Anyone thinking of buying or changing up their boat and interested in becoming part of this fleet can contact me at andrew_riem@hotmail.com as I have a list of hulls currently for sale.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members who attended my recent fundraiser, as well as those who were unable to attend. The night of the Fundraiser (and the days following) could not have been more successful. With the generous donations and endless support, I was able to surpass my fundraising goals! Not only did we reach my target, but it was nice to have numerous members, family and friends come together and show their support for me. It means so much to know that your support extends well beyond the doors of the OYS.

I am so proud to be given the opportunity to represent Canada and our club at the upcoming Laser Olympic qualifier in Perth, Australia. Furthermore, I hope to earn a spot on Canada’s Olympic Sailing Team and make all of my supporters proud!

Thank you again for contributing to such a successful fundraiser. I hope you all enjoyed an evening full of fun, games and laughter.

Sincerely,

Lee Parkhill

Race Director’s Report

What a great Sailing Week!

As they often are, Laser sailors were madly off in all directions, and did not Tuesday night this week. That’s OK though, as it is being moved to Sundays. R/C will run the Sunday Series and the Lasers together, so if there are some fence sitters, this is the time to come out and try.

No sailing Tuesday turned into some sailed Wednesday. With winds 20 – 25 and easterly rollers up to 9ft, some elected to go out, and the 10 boats that did had an excellent sail. Course was modified/simplified by not having a mark boat. Oyster then set the marks and with only a short postponement, the race was run. Excellent job all of you that made it out. High pressure, big wave and warm water made this a great sailing night.

So the end of summer brings variable weather, and as fast as the lake rose up for Wednesday did it die down for Thursday. Sundown of course comes much earlier, and the breeze started to diminish as this happen, prompting the R/C to shorten. Praise was cast by all. No prizes were given out this week , but for Final Thursday we have something for all competitors, so get off the boat any come up and enjoy!

The season for Sunday Series has shown up again, and for the 10 boats that participated this light air day got the fleet back to the finish line anywhere between 2.5 and 3 and a bit hours. Great day to spend some time on the water. R/C had a tour up to Bronte to have a look at some of our fleet, and to gas up while we were there, and to marvel at BHYC 45 odd boats sailing in there Sunday Series. Although we will not revile those numbers, an effort to support this series must be made. We only have a handful of racing days left, so let’s make an effort to use them up. There is no saving a day; we need to use them as they come.

So, on that note, off to use up another day, unfortunately not in the best way, ’cause no racing on Monday.

P.S. R/C is looking for volunteers for next season. Come and try it out on Sundays if you like. Good fun and some valuable insights into racing.

Intense stormy weekend almost gott’em. LOSHR 100 Milers avoid brunt of storm activity, and continue to finish the race with only 12 of 60 starting dropping out. Last years was just under half, so thank the R/C for planning the race just perfectly in that window. (R/C always has something to do with it). Congrats go out to Bikini 11 and 1-800 for winning their divisions, Tracker for 3rd in their division, and once again to 1-800, who, with 2 other boats in her fleet, were the only boats to correct better than their elapsed times!

Congrats also goes out to Gladiator, who placed second, in a tie breaker, (again). This was the U.S. Championships, on Lake Erie. Last year the tiebreaker went in their favour, so well done back to back. Speaking of backs, The Bill’s back is pretty sore for competing in the U.S. Nationals as well. They competed hard for final spot on the page, sailing with seasoned helm and bow men, just got outpointed in the last race by some savvy Sheila’s, Congrats. All around.

Three races were sailed Tuesday by the well managed R/C. Thanks once again for being there. Eight boats strong, breeze starting out 8 – 12 and dying toward sunset, which did not fail again to impress in its beauty. Red sky at night……. And, for those who have not sailed a Laser, we have an Open House/Sail on the water this Tuesday. Coach Boat with a coach will be provided. Photo-op – priceless. Back to Red Sky at Night…………

Means making a decision that may bite. No need to tell you about Wednesdays cancelled race event, accept the storm that did roll in, late, was spectacular. Tommy Burgers went down well again, and the delay and cancellation in racing meant for an opportunity to drink the bilges dry. Hope you were up to the task.

Dry bilges meant for fast boats on Thursday, and a triangle set for longer reaches meant to exemplify those fast boats. Wind built throughout the race, which made it hard to TRY to earn a PITCHER, but a savvy sailor did claim his prize, and only the score sheet knows who it may be!

The weekend brought the CROMPTON SHARK REGATTA to town, otherwise known at the Provincials, to OYS. Weaker winds allowed one race on Saturday, followed by strong 15 – 25 with 5 – 7 ft. seas for Sunday. Great Shark conditions, although hard work. Three races in, despite some delays, a great racing day and, in my opinion, a great weekend both sailing and especially to the organizers and volunteers; a great job done by all. Congrats. to the OYS boats that sailed this event – great representation! Please have a look at the posted results – locals did well.

Looking forward, Bronte Rocks this coming weekend. Oyster will be there running a coarse, and we need a volunteer of two to help out. A great opportunity to learn a bit about race running and great snacks too! The party isn’t too bad either.

Also, Canada’s Cup runs this weekend – Farr 40’s match racing on Lake Michigan. http://canadascup2011.us/

So, until next report, sail fast, sail lots, sail for fun!

AB
